Practicing Tips and Tricks!
1. Schedule a short specific amount of time to practice everyday- Try practicing right before or after you do your homework!
If you practice the same day as your lesson, you have a better chance of retaining what you learned :)
2. Always try to practice a little bit everyday- this is better than practicing a lot for only two days.
3. Practice the tricky spots first- that way you will feel more confident when you put it together with the comfortable spots.
4. Don't always start at the beginning of a song- try starting the song in the middle or at the very end to mix it up!
5. Perform for you family, friends, or pets! This will help you feel more comfortable when playing in class with large or small groups.
6. Get inspired! Watch videos of professional musicians playing the same instrument as you or attend a M.S. or H.S. concert to see the musician you can potentially grow into!
7. Use a "Metronome/Tuner" App or purchase one at the music store to help you play at a steady beat and stay in-tune during your practicing.
Remember- the more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you will become which will make learning music a ton of fun!
How do you practice a new piece of music??
In order:
1. Say the NOTES/LETTERS to the rhythm of the piece
Hot Cross Buns Example: F E D (rest) F E D (rest) DDDDEEEE F E D (rest)
2. Say the FINGER NUMBER used for each note to the rhythm of the piece
Violin Hot Cross Buns Example: 2 1 0 (rest) 2 1 0 (rest) 00001111 2 1 0 (rest)
3. PIZZICATO or PLUCK it in correct position
Pluck with your index finger with your thumb mounted on the side of fingerboard
4. BOW it!
Place your bow and fingers on the correct string before you begin
Try to take the song apart by practice two measures at a time. Gradually combine measures until you complete the song! If you are unsure about the notes, use "Ms. Greenberg's Instrument Guide" which should be in your music folder.
