3rd Grade Instrument Selection!

1. What is the instrument selection process like?
During the spring, Dr. Shanefield and I host a short assembly at each elementary school for the 3rd Grade students and teachers. During the assembly, we introduce and play every instrument that we offer in the 4th Grade Instrumental Program. After, students are to bring home a form to parents where, together, you decide the "Top Three Instruments" that your child would like to learn and return the form to us.
2. How do we get an instrument?
Later in the Spring, we host a mandatory parent meeting for parents of students who plan to participate in the 4th Grade Instrumental Program. At this meeting, Music & Arts Rental Company will have representatives there to help set up instrument rentals. You may also set up a rental on your own by visiting or contacting their store locating in the Lawrence Park Shopping Center in Bromall.
The following instruments may be rented from the School District: String Bass, French horn, Baritone, Tuba.
Please be aware that the school district is limited in the number of instruments they can rent out
All other instruments can be rented through the music rental company called Music & Arts.
3. Can I purchase an instrument instead of renting?
Dr. Shanefield and I highly recommend that students rent an instrument from the Music&Arts rental company as they provide reliable, good quality instruments that will help your child be most successful during their first year of learning. Music&Arts also has a great rent-to-own program where the monthly rental cost goes towards the purchase of the instrument in the future. Please call Music&Arts for more details about this opportunity.
If you do choose to purchase an instrument, please consult either Dr. Shanefield or myself. It can be a risk to purchase instruments online since you never know the quality you will receive.
Please DO NOT purchase colored instruments or AMAZON instruments- although physically/financially appealing, these instruments are known for poor quality of sound and difficulty staying in tune which are very important to a beginner's success.
4. When can my child start playing?
Your child can start learning their instrument either in the Summer or Fall. Haverford's Summer Music Programhosts two 3-week sessions of instrumental lessons. For more information about the summer music program please contact the director, Alex Gittelman, at [email protected].
If you are interested in having your child work with a private teacher, please visit our district private teacher list at the link below:
